White Forest, 2017

2 paintings; graphite, ink on paper, hand-cut, painting size 42×340 inch, 1×8.6 meter, installation size 14×24 feet, 4,3×7,3 meter, at The Frank, Pembroke Pines

“A 28 feet long paper was installed on the wall. I set up simple strategies to compose the painting. The initial pencil lines record my movement along the wall. I used any mistakes, uncertainty or accidents deviating from the set rule as an incentive to reconsider and repeat the deviation building up new rules on the paper. Each of the initial fast pencil lines was repainted with a slow brush line of ink color. Towards the end of the painting process, I added vertical, straight-edged lines and color fields in a visual rhythm relating the composition to architectural upright elements. Eventually, the areas between the lines were cut away with a knife. The paper painting plane became a two-sided object in space. The cutout paintings create architectural elements that once installed define space as they offer a gaze into the next area, concealing and revealing visitors.” HH, 2017
